The Runestone is the largest Ordinal inscription ever with a file size of 3,967,899 bytes (3.967 MB). It is one of only seven Ordinal inscriptions larger than 400,000 bytes (400 KB) and was created in collaboration with OrdinalsBot and Marathon Digital Holdings who mined it in block 832,947 which set the record for being the largest block in Bitcoin's history (3,991,547 bytes/3.991 MB). This block will immutably preserve The Runestone for our descendants and is a technical feat that is as much a piece of art as The Runestone itself.

The Runestone artist, Léo Caillard, is traditionally known for his marble sculptures, carved in his Parisian studio, which find their way into private collections, public spaces, and museums around the world. The challenge of carving a Bitcoin block into a precious digital stone presented a unique opportunity for Léo who typically uses physical marble blocks as his medium. Just as the great marble sculptures of antiquity have been preserved through millennia, so too will The Runestone. It symbolizes the enduring desire of humanity to make marks that last beyond their lifetimes and to communicate with future generations. This endeavor was more than a technical achievement. It is a bridge between past, present, and future, a reminder that art, in all its forms, seeks to capture the ephemeral and make it eternal. The Runestone art is released under the CC0 license and was donated to the Runestone initiative by Léo.

The Runestone is part of a volunteer, decentralized initiative to airdrop 112,383 delegate inscriptions to the year one Ordinals community in the largest Ordinals airdrop ever. 112,383 addresses that were active in the first year of the Ordinal protocol will soon receive a Runestone inscription for free. Each of these inscriptions will point to The Runestone on-chain file using a new feature of the Ordinal protocol called delegation. This makes The Runestone by far the rarest inscription in a 112,384 piece collection that otherwise has no rarity. This airdrop aspires to reward the year one Ordinals community in as fair and Bitcoin of a way as possible. There is no team allocation, pre-sale, etc., and the open-source eligibility algorithm was designed to not favor whales. Runestone is a non-utility project and The Runestone and its delegate inscriptions that point to it are collectible pieces of art that are intended to be worn as badges of honor for those who showed up and believed in the Ordinal protocol when nobody else did.

100% of the proceeds from this auction will be used to cover the Bitcoin network fees associated with the Runestone initiative and airdrop. This means the proceeds will go to Bitcoin miners and will increase the security budget of the Bitcoin network.
