May is ALS awareness month, and to show our support, Bitcoin Magazine is auctioning off a rare piece of Bitcoin history: 300 satoshis from block 78, mined by Hal Finney on January 10, 2009. The first sat from the 300 has been inscribed with a certificate of authenticity. The 299 sats located right after the first one can be moved out by anyone who holds the inscription at any time.

100% of the proceeds from this auction will be donated to the ALS Association Golden West Chapter, to support research and advocacy for those affected by this devastating disease.

Hal Finney was a cryptographer an early Bitcoin pioneer, and this was the very first block he ever mined. These sats were mined on the same day of Hal’s famous "Running bitcoin" tweet, making them a truly rare find.

In fact, the only older sats in circulation are the ones that Satoshi Nakamoto mined in block 9 and sent to Hal Finney in the first-ever P2P transaction on the Bitcoin network. If Satoshi never returns, the sats from block 9 will be the only ones in circulation that are timestamped earlier than those from block 78.

Thanks to Ordinal Theory and the efforts of sat hunter Nullish, these valuable sats have been found, secured and donated for this auction on the Scarce City platform.
