The Penny Orange pays homage to Bitcoin, the groundbreaking decentralised protocol that is revolutionising the way we transmit value and energy.
This work draws inspiration from the Penny Black, the first adhesive postage stamp released in 1840, which transformed the postal system by introducing a flat rate of one penny for letter delivery, regardless of the distance.
Today, Bitcoin is simplifying the global transmission of value with a flat fee, regardless of your location on our planet.
In place of the traditional image of the British Monarch, the Penny Orange features Satoshi Nakamoto in his modest suit, encircled by 21 pips on the vertical sides. Satoshi symbolises Bitcoin as the new king of the modern age—not born into privilege, untouched by celebrity, and unbound by established states. Satoshi represents all of us.
Bitcoin is the money of the people. Rules without rulers.
These rules are encoded in open source software—a transparent decentralised immutable protocol underpinning this shift in power that any user can verify. Similarly, the Penny Orange can be authenticated by shining a UV light source to reveal the Genesis Block Hash—the imperceptible string that serves as the foundation for all Bitcoin transactions since its inception.
This image is limited to just 21 Giclee prints on exquisite Hahnemuhle art paper, meticulously hand-finished with UV ink of currency-grade security, adding an ironic twist to its symbolism.
